Day 30 - Kansas City
the I left Shenandoah around 11 this morning and headed towards Kansas City, even taking the interstate part of the way to get here sooner.  I only had some pomegranate juice for breakfast because I wanted to make sure I was hungry for lunch which I was intending to eat at a fried chicken place called Stroud's.  According to one of the books I have it is considered by many to be the best fried chicken in the country.  That was all I needed to hear.  I arrived in KC around 1:30 and set out to locate Stroud's, which according to the 2 books I was looking at, is located at 1015 East 85th St.  I followed the directions I had mapped out while driving (I've become very good at reading maps and driving at the same time) and arrived at E 85th St.  I started looking at the numbers on the buildings right away and saw 804.  The next number I saw on the other side if the street was 1185.  Ok, I figured, I must have passed it.  I turn around and see 927.  Must have passed it again.  Turn around again.  There's 1185.  What the f#@k? Turn into 927 again for a closer inspection.  I even tried driving around back to see if it's a speakeasy type place hidden away in a little corner where outsiders are not supposed to find it.  Not there.  Next I see a delivery guy and ask him where Stroud's is.  He gives me the bad news: it was torn down around Christmas!  But there's another one just north of the city.  I whip out one of my maps and ask him to show me.  He tells me the directions and I'm off.  By the way, by this point I'm absolutely starving.  I drive the 20 miles in just under 12 seconds flat and finally arrive at Stroud's other location.  Hmm... seems a little empty.  Oh they don't serve lunch.  F#@k!!!!!!!! At this point its about 2:30 and I'm starved.  I leave the place and pull into a gas station to regroup.  I decided to buy some beef jerky to temporarily satisfy my hunger until I can find another eating gem in KC.  I take out my book again and look up the rib place that I remember being mentioned in there, Arthur Bryant's.  I hop back on the highway heading back in the direction I just came from and start my search for Arthur Bryant's.  Eventually I find it after a few botched turns and head inside for some ribs.  They were a treat as expected.  Before you walk into the place you can smell the burning wood that is being used to cook the ribs.  They had a bit of a smokey flavor and came right off the bone.  They also had some unique homemade bbq sauces which I of course used in abundance.  When the ribs were gone I had two slices of white bread left along with my fries.  I didn't know how I was going to eat two slices of dry white bread so I placed some fries on one of them then smothered it with bbq sauce.  Next I folded it over and ate it like a hotdog. Delicious of course.  The second one went down pretty quick also.  Lunch ended up being successful although admittedly I was a little disappointed I was not able to get the fried chicken. Since it was still early afternoon I figured I could still do lot with the day.  I take a look in my book and noticed that there's a jazz museum nearby: perfect.  I cruise around searching for it and finally locate it. Oh wait, its monday so its closed.  Ok, next plan.  There's a Harley Davidson final assembly plant in KC, sounds like fun.  Oh wait, it closes at 3:00 and its 3:30 now. Another bust.  I head downtown to at least take a look around.  Things look nice but its 102 degrees out so I'm not really interested in walking around.  I pull over to a shady spot to call some hotels to find a cheap place to stay for the night.  While I'm on the phone with one of them the fuzz comes by and chases me away because I haven't put any money in the meter.  Frustrated I hop on the highway and head towards the Harley plant to at least see where it is.  After some wrongs turns I finally find it.  It opens at 8 am tomorrow so I think I'll try to wake up early and go for a tour.  I got a hotel now and am not sure what's on the agenda for the rest of the evening.  I know I have to do laundry though so that will be a pain in the neck. Not sure if I'm going to try to head to Stroud's for some dinner because I'm still too stuffed from lunch.
The eating continues...
