Day 28 - Council Grove, KS
After last night’s recommendation for the one place to eat at before leaving Larned, I headed towards Meyer’s Deli for lunch before leaving town.  The philly steak sandwich I had was very good and so was the homemade Italian herb bread that it was made on.  The other thing that made the place worthwhile were the nice people that worked there.  The trend continues of very nice people throughout the midwest.  At Meyer’s they have a map up on the wall showing where all customers come from and they are only missing Rhode Island right now.  I put a pin in for NY on the map (there were only a couple of others) but if anyone reading this is from Rhode Island and is going to Kansas they sure would be happy if you went through and ate at their deli (yes, I do realize that the odds of anyone reading this being from Rhode Island and going to Larned, Kansas is almost exactly zero).  I left the pleasant little deli and started heading east towards wherever it was I was heading.  I passed through Wichita and had a look around but decided to keep going.  Unfortunately I did not see the first White Castle and the first Pizza Hut and actually did not do enough research to even find out if those locations still exist today in Wichita.  Anyway, I kept driving and ultimately decided to stop in Council Grove (still in Kansas) because my book told me that they had a really good restaurant and at least one hotel (two pluses).  The restaurant was called Hay’s House and had been there for a good long time (I don’t remember how long though).  I was planning on getting some fried chicken but the menu said they had certified black angus steak so I opted for that instead.  The waitress recommended the Kansas City strip which cut like butter and was as tasty as I expected.  I followed that up with some fresh strawberry pie and walked out ready to have a heart attack.  I found a small motel owned by a guy who used to live in Newburg, NY and have decided I will stay in for the night instead of driving down to the one bar in town.  I think a night of some sober guitar playing will do me some good.  At least I won’t be consuming anymore calories anyway.  Well, that’s assuming I don’t tap into the doggy bag that I brought home from the restaurant....
