Day 29 - Shenandoah, IA
I left Grove Council this morning with the intention of going to Omaha and driving through Topeka, KS on the way.  I arrived in Topeka and drove around the city for a little while.  I took a look at the Kansas state capitol building but besides that I didn’t see too much to look at. I’m sure there’s more to see if you are actually willing to get out of your car but I didn’t feel like doing that so I continued on my way.  I arrived in Nebraska and made my way through to Omaha to take a look around.  I had heard that the zoo is really impressive (better than San Diego according to some) but it was over 100 degrees so there was no way I was going to the zoo.  I figured if the animals were half as lazy as I am they would be completely immobile and probably sleeping in the shade somewhere.  So I drove around Omaha a little but never got out of the car.  The heat was definitely taking a toll on my desire to get out of the car and I really couldn’t find a downtown area where I could have got out of the car and walked around.  I could have been completely missing it I’m sure but I didn’t get that good feeling I got when I entered some other cities so I headed across the river to Council Bluffs, Iowa to cruise around.  It was more or less the same story so I decided to pick a town on the map nearby and go there.  The small towns are less intimidating to go to because you can pretty confident you are seeing most of the town by just driving up and down a few streets.  There are less hotel choices also which makes things a little easier when trying to decide what location it would be best to stay in.  So I left Council Bluffs and headed towards Shenandoah where I’ve stopped for the night.  The guy at the front desk of the motel told me that Iowa is the only place where if you hit a cow on the road you are liable for it - apparently he found out the the hard way.  I can’t say for sure if that’s the only state where that’s true but that’s what he said.  As far as I’m concerned if you can’t keep your cows on your own property it shouldn’t be my fault.  Not too much going on in this town.  I went to a sort of brew pub for a beer but it was pretty dead so went to the movies.  I saw You, Me and Dupree which was pretty funny and only cost $6.50.  One thing is for sure: I will certainly miss these prices when I get back to NY.  Heading to Kansas City tomorrow.
If you hit a cow you pay for it
