I left Ogden this morning and took a very scenic drive to Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. A lot of the scenery in Utah resembled the terrain of its southern neighbor, Arizona. Canyons surround the roadways on either side as route 89 passes into Wyoming which made for some nice, if not distracting, driving. To get into Grand Teton through the south entrance you have to pass through Jackson, WY which is a very nice little town they’ve tried to maintain as an old west town. It looked pretty cool but was overrun with tourists so I didn’t do too much snooping around. I had a cheeseburger at Billy’s Giant Cheeseburgers and then entered the park. I got a camping site at the Colter Bay campground and decided to look around. The Teton mountain range is impressive and reaches very high into the sky. Also the mountains look to have resisted major weathering over time and still appear sharp on top and not overly rounded and boring like a lot of other mountains I’ve seen. As sunset approached I walked down to the bay to shoot some photos (of the sunset, not the bears that I thought might stalk and kill me). The sunset was nice, as was expected, and I think I got some good pictures, although you can judge for yourself. After that I headed back to my campsite and lit a fire. I’ve been reading Steinbeck’s ‘Travels with Charley in Search of America’ and continued to do so while the fire burned. Eventually I put the fire out and retired to the tent for some rest. I intend to see some more of Grand Teton tomorrow and then head onto Yellowstone National Park which is directly north of here.
